Pink Floyd’s memorable verses from their Syd Barret tribute album seems to be what Carlos Tevez is singing to all of Manchester right now, red or blue. Though the blue side wouldn’t have been so happy that he chose Sunday to sing it at full volume, killing off the Manchester Derby by half-time with a wonderfully taken goal.
That his ‘can you hear me’ celebration was the only thing that the papers caught on and beat to death after the derby, was saying something about the match itself. Two teams turned up at the derby, only one was playing, though the other wasn’t for lack of trying. Manchester City looked like the team your fourth-grade cousin hurriedly put together, so that they can then play with your college gang. Since it is after all your cousin, you play in their team (Robinho) and try to do everything at the same time. However, in the end you can only watch helplessly as you get picked apart by the other team playing at approximately 60%. Sunday picnic nicely wrapped up, thank the kids for playing, and pack up for the sub-20-mile trip to Wigan.
There’s been a lot of debate over whether the potential combined price tag of $90 Million for Tevez and Berbatov is something United need, what with Ronaldo and Rooney already in there as permenent fixtures. On the evidence of Wednesday night, one has to say ‘Why not’. At the risk of turning this into an alliteration, the Win over Wigan on Wednesday Was fashioned by the Wonderful skill of all four together. The Fab Four, already titled thus after the comeback of the season from 2-0 down at Spurs, were at hand to turn it around again, though this time, they got by with a little help from their friends (pardon the unintentional littering of the post with music connects, I must be on song).
When the match kicked off in bright sunlight but pouring rain at 2000 hrs, BST, I was wondering “Why the hell would the Brits call this 8 o’clock?” Then I figured I’d answered my own question – Because they’re Brits. Well, halfway into the half, the lights came on, Vidic got taken down by a combination of a puny Colombian and a treacherous pitch, the same puny Colombianย drilled the ball into the net, Liverpool suddenly sat up and took notice, and the rest of Wigan decided that it’s still better to stay at home than travel to the stadium. Yeah we’ve been up 1-0 against United before, not like we’ve won. Congratulations my sensible Wigan friend. You were right.
From the introduction of Tevez in the 52nd minute, it was mostly just one-way traffic, though this chap Valencia was being pretty slippery throughout the game. No wonder Liverpool and United are engaged in a battle over his signature. The equalizer was a story of one mishit, and one very awesome hit. ‘Impudent backheel’ is the description that has been used for Tevez’s flick, and that’s about as good a phrase as you can use for it. The Wigan keeper (yes yes, Kingson, I know his name) on Wednesday was like Cech in the Champion League semi: Total saves: 0, Goals Conceded: 1. After that, it was only a matter of time really, and the man who mishit the first goal, was on hand to hit the second very sweetly indeed.
Michael Carrick is another of the Tottenham-United move makers who’s still tipping the scales evenly between ‘Good bay-Bad buy’. Well, he’s not money wasted, but somehow you feel he’s not Scholes II either. If he hadn’t been in the Lampard-Gerrard era, you feel he’d have got more international games, and got better. But they are very much around, and very evidently better than him, so that’s the way the Carrick has to crumble. However, the way he ‘caarrrressseedd’ the ball into the net, to quote Andy Gray, can have done no harm to his standing as a quality player at all. Coming as it did on the back of Ronaldo having swiped a few times – at the ball with his feet , at the ground with his hands and at Sir Alex verbally, it showed up as an even better goal than it would normally be.
United can now lift the trophy at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Arsenal watching. Keeping with the Brit bands references, that would be The Sweetest Thing indeed.
Tevez : Can you hear me ?
ManU Fans : Yes, Wi-Gan !
Your post could have qualified for a WTGW + Main Quiz LVC ๐
Anyways, it’s off to the Saturday match at Old Trafford where Monsieur Wenger would probably be saying at the post-match conf ” Fuul credit to zem. Zey played wondreful futbol and dezerved to leeft the league title zis year. We hope zat Arzenal will put a better performance next year and hopefully come 3rd at the very least”.
Glory, Glory!
“We hope zat Arzenal will put a better performance next year and hopefully come 3rd at the very least” ๐ ๐ ๐ After today, I think it would’ve been more like “I zink we shoulda scored, but zen, I zink that after every match”
Amidst all the celebration and joy I am afraid I have to strike bit of a sour note. Given this -http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={48C41513-A376-4D1F-981D-660FC5BB193E}&newsid=6632223&page=1-….I think we can soon expect to hear that annoying Airtel tune blare all over the Old T. And perhaps a halftime show by Saif and his cohorts. Maybe Madhavan and Divya Balan will even text for your benefit!!
The possibilities are limitless. Be afraid…. be very afraid ๐
Spake,
Shit! That’s a scary one man… Roon and Ronny texting each other “Free, through ball! LOL, h r u” and all that.
As long as they keep winning, i dont think it is going to matter.
Let it be for now….Tevez should be thinking “All i ve gotta do now is help my Club to champions league glory” and tell Fergie “You know what to do.” and “We can work it out.” to Joorabchian. I hope he stays here for a long, long, long time. After all all things come to pass.
nice article.. very subtely written… tevez, carrick, evra, anderson may not be glamourous or showstoppers, but they have enormous talent… they are worth their million dollar contracts.. i feel they are yet to achieve their full potential… same for the rest of the United squad… i have a feeling this team is destined for even greater heights… i am sure We will lift the trophy on Saturday… and this coming at Old Trafford would no doubt be The Sweetest Thing indeed.
GLORY GLORY GLORY MANCHESTER UNITED
Yep, I think Evra is simply awesome. As is Anderson, especially on european nights. And, well, there’s the league. 3 down, 1 to go ๐
dude.. we need some replacement for ryan giggs.. we can’t keep rooney on the left forever!

Wow. I am popular. No surprise then there are impersonators going about. ๐
You are popular, no doubt man…you are the “Albatross” of the east, the “eagle” which defies the odds, a “condor” trying to make a name for itself in the eastern hemisphere, all in all you are a mysterious and mercurial birdie , the bogey-man who scares the shit out of Arsenal and Utd Fans.
๐
Dude.. More than popular, more like the village idiot who everyone wants around so that we have our fair dose of fun.
