I probably am going to be accused to doing a Keyrock here. You know being a fair weather blogger. I know I have remained conspicuously quiet starting from Sunderland through Citeh. Guilty as charged. Shame on me.
Two people who must be kicking themselves after yesterday are the two writers on this blog whose teams failed to pick up the three points yesterday. Not because their teams didn’t win; the Eastlands is a difficult place to go to as we’ve found out twice this season; but because god finally woke up and smacked them right on their mouths which they so foolishly shot off BEFORE the game. Turns out we did win and they didn’t. This has got to be one of the most up and down title races in a really long time. Chelsea have lost 3 as have United, a fact unremarkable by itself. But consider that fact that Chelsea have lost to Wigan and United to Burnley and you understand why I think any one of the three are still in it.
Remarkably the Arsenal side that was put out consisted of Almunia, the back four and 6 midfielders. Not one player who in your average fantasy football game would be listed under striker. Andrei Sergeyevich Arshavin however was given the responsibility for the first time of leading the lines and did he revel in that role! He was at the heart of almost every move we made giving Cesc who was having a shocker of a day (by his standards) a break. The Holy Trinity that was has lost one in Van Persie and desperately needs Arshavin and Cesc to put in extraordinary performances week in and week out.
We probably did need 6 across the middle because Stoke clearly intended to park the bus and stem our usual marauding. Their unimaginative attack plan was largely dependent on Delap’s hands and though Almunia wasn’t entirely comfortable always, I thought we handled it pretty well. Tuncay Sanli spent the entire night spitting on the pitch and running into offside positions. The one time he beat the trap he was so unused to the feeling, he gave the ball right back to us immediately. At the other end, Sorensen was keeping Stoke in with some sharp saves primarily off Arshavin. I thought we were going to be one up when Delap clearly unaccustomed to using his feet during the game attempted a tackle and upended the little Russian. Cesc sadly took a poor penalty although Sorensen was way off his line way too soon. Still, I don’t think giving Cesc this responsibility also is too good an idea. I’d think Arshavin or maybe even Vermaelen could be given spot kick duties. Emmanuel Eboue pulled off a brilliant save off the line, sadly though for us it was Cesc’s shot he blocked depriving me of 5 precious fantasy league points. Sigh it just wasn’t my day.
Clichy, Djourou, Gibbs, Van Persie, Walcott, Bendtner and Diaby. This impressive injury list was further bolstered by the addition of Rosicky, Eduardo, Eboue and Gallas. A fine 4-3-3 I could form out of it. A back four of Eboue, Gallas, Djourou and Clichy, Diaby playing central defensive midfielder, Rosicky and Walcott creative feeding Bendtner, Van Persie and Eduardo. Brilliant. NOT. Though Eboue’s injury was cue for Aaron ‘Rambo’ Ramsey to make an entrance and score s umptuous goal reminiscent of the one he scored for Wales against Scotland and settle any nerves that were jumpy with the score stuck at 1-0.
Liverpool next. The people we have should be enough to make a match out of it at Anfield I think. After all we have 4 goal wonder Arshavin ready and willing.
Chelsea’s aura of invincibility took another severe dent with a loss to City which saw Drogba back to his petulant antics. Irritating how he always seems to pull up his socks against us. Anyway, for once this season Arsenal fans must be pleased Adebayor scored and United fans sharing a similar feeling about Tevez. Lampard missing a potential point saving penalty was icing on the cake really. Rounded up a fine day. Of course United losing too would have been a dream but you can’t have everything in life.

I give up. There’s no way Liverpool are going to win against Arsenal
Hey Maddy,
With Arsenal becoming more and more dependent on Cesc and Arshavin, they run the danger of becoming like Liverpool. It’s not that Cesc or Andrei cannot handle the pressure, but if they get injured, the desperation to win forces them back, not 100%..
I admire Arsene Wenger’s youth-sytem policy, but don’t you think it’s time that they bought some players, who are a little senior – some one to fill up the gap left by Toure.
Also, someone hefty in midfield to protect Cesc – something similar to Chelsea employing Essien and Mikel to protect Fat Frank, allowing an otherwise average midfielder to look brilliant? Maybe, someone like a Gattuso or Viera…
Well that is exactly what he’s expecting Song and Denilson to do da. And whatever anyone says, i think both of them are doing an admirable job. Considering the fact that they’re only 21 and 22 they have a wonderful time ahead i think.
And don’t forget the Cesc Arsh dependency has come about because of the fact that so many others are injured. not only because they are our best players. Generally they’re allowed to do their thing and others support them expertly.
Point… noted..
There is no way Arsenal are going get Gattuso or Viera.. But this is one of the most interesting EPL season’s ever and I do hope that the only 2 last players with over 50 games experience in Arsenal(Cesc n Arshavin) don’t get injured.
Gunner,
I said someone like a Gattusso or Viera.. A player who will throw in tackles, win the ball, help the defense, and most importantly, protect the midfield. Look at the way Essien and Mikel protect the likes of Lampard and Deco.
i think song is pretty impressive. he looks pretty solid.Arsenal need to sort out their injury woes…Even with imminent returns in Jan/Febraury,arsenal need someone to bolster their attack particularly to score against the weaker teams. With champions league in the picture(during feb, march) they better get someone . The fact that the bottom of the league looks more closer than the top is, will probably lead to teams scampering for points (and tackles flowing for free)…
Lets’ wait and watch
Maddy, Cesc and Arshavin are good players, but how long is Arsenal gonna follow this gung-ho approach to players signing. There is no point in being foolishly brave and putting up 21-22 year olds against hardy professionals week in week out. Especially given the number of injuries, as u put it, a better team perhaps off the pitch than on it. The squad needs to be bigger and better. Bear in mind it has been some time since the last title. The Professor might be missing a trick or two!
Oh i thoroughly disagree. Our 21-22 year olds are hardy pros themselves. Cesc is 22 for heavens sake. And i dont think our squad is missing more than 1 or 2 players. The fact that even with this many injuries we still can put out a solid team is testament to that fact.
It’s only unfortunate that Arsenal pick up injuries where players in form are out for years. The team does not need new players right now.
This was a good win for Arsenal. I am a Man U fan so don’t shoot me but I have a large warm spot in my heart for Arsenal. Why? I saw the movie Fever Pitch with Colin Firth. I am the same way. I saw the movie ten times. My wife thinks I am nuts. I have the papers to prove it.
Still this was a good win for the Gunners. Arshavin’s goal was beauty. This was set up Fabregas. Fabregas could have been the goat for the missed PK.
The EPL winner will have between four and six losses.

This will worry Arsenal..
http://www.espnstar.com/football/primera-liga/news/detail/item363706/Real-&-Barca-to-bid-%C2%A350m-for-Fabregas-
No da. Not really. He’s reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal time and again even going as far as saying ‘Why Not? I’m having a wonderful time here’ when asked if he could finish his career at Arsenal. While i admit the chances of that are virtually zero, i know for a fact that as long as Wenger is at the club he wont leave.
And in any case that comment of his is totally out of context. After the nth time he said he is not going to move to barcelona he was asked if he could ever consider playing for Real considering he’s catalan and that was his reply.
I am not worried one bit. He’s going to be here for another 2 3 years atleast.
True..
To be honest, it looks like Barca is bidding for him more out of political reasons. I think Laporta’s biggest fear is Real Madrid snapping him up. Nothing can be more embarrassing for a Catalan than admitting to his club supporters that they’ve lost a Catalan to the mega-bucks of Real Madrid..
However with Barca looking to get stronger and stronger, the temptations to return home might just about become too much to resist..
Wenger needs to win.. Fast!
Laporta and Perez are CUNTS of the first order. Football will be SO much better without those two. They should leave it to the Wengers and Fergies and Guardiolas. Actually no. Rafa would have to be involved. Scratch that idea
Hey Maddy,
I don’t think it’s Laporta’s fault – he’s just trying to keep up with Real Madrid. I think it’s more of a political thing, than him wanting to spend. If you see the current squad – Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Pique, Pedro, Krkic are all academy boys. Yaya Toure was quite an unknown before Kolo Toure became Arsenal captain (
) and Keita was unknown till they began winning. The only real signings they’ve had of late is Henry and Alves. Ibrahimovich signing was ridiculous!
Perez is just doing an Abromovich – spending like crazy, thinking you can buy every cup. It might have worked for Real in the past, but he should learn a lesson from Chelsea’s Champions League success (or lack thereof)..
Nothing like hearing the name Iniestaaaaaaaa in injury time…
nice post man maddy, and yesh, I believe we we can make a game of it at Anfield. Nothing like seeing two teams with injury crises running into each other. Will be good I think.
