Warning : This could be boring
The Past few weeks have seen the worst crisis period of your wonderful career. There are times I used to think what made you quit as a Valencia coach and join Liverpool. You had two La Liga titles and a Uefa cup glory with a meek Valencia side. And yet you chose us because of an altercation with your former employers. You asked for a table and they gave you a Lampshade. That was your answer. Which makes me wonder. Because a lot of people keep asking why Rafa Benitez is still not sacked as the Liverpool Coach. A Ridiculous question. My way of putting it is why hasn’t Rafa Benitez quit Liverpool yet. You asked for a table and you had to buy a Lampshade. Only you had to sell for it.
If only people realise what you have done for a club that was at the end of a tottering collapse. The club was on the verge of becoming the next Leeds having lost Michael Owen, the then Fernando Torres, on cheap. Many might have forgotten that Steven Gerrard was on his way to Chelsea. In an ideal world any manager would have made money on Gerrard and bought a couple of strikers to replace Owen. You chose to convince him by giving him an attacking role, a master-stroke, which led to a never before seen Gerrard drilling goals whenever the team needed. Since then he has scored in double digits every season a feat which he accomplished once far back in 2001. This is for me your greatest move even bigger than the signing of Torres. I can only shudder to think what it would have been had it went otherwise.
There are many other pieces of gem, some of which I would like to highlight. Making Jamie Carragher, a non-regular under Houllier, the cornerstone of Liverpool defence, signing of Pepe Reina who has won three consecutive golden gloves, Xabi Alonso the pass master, Luis Garcia’s role in UCL, Javier Mascherano one rotting in West Ham reserves to the one who Barcelona will sign for a 36m fee, transformation of Dirk Kuyt the striker to Dirk Kuyt the winger, Steven Gerrard as second striker and Fernando Torres who was not exactly the next big thing in football as many say now but a promising 14 goals per year youngster etc. The list goes on. Those were the highs. There are lows as well like Andrea “and the ball goes for a goal kick” Dossena who will leave Liverpool as a fullback but yet to deliver a single accurate cross. Of course the lows list goes on as well but none as glaringly obvious as this.
Anyone in this gloryhunting part of which I live will say your only accomplishment was six minutes of freaky football plus a FA Cup. Something easier to say. My way of recognising your feats is how you moved up a team that was 30 points behind the leaders when you arrived to a team that came daringly close last year. Your arrival to the club was made tough by the beginning of a new Chelsea empire. And since then even Arsenal who were once part of the big two have found it difficult. If only there was a way of recognising runner up positions and adding them up you would stand right up there above all. But that’s the way I see it. For me the titles take a backseat. It’s the little moments that come and go by every weekend that matter more. Like your twin substitutions against Olympiakos turning the game for us, benching Gerrard for a League match that caused an uproar only to be called a gem move after Istanbul, transforming Peter Crouch’s head from a non-goal scoring streak to a goal scoring one including a header against United in the run up to FA cup glory, how you took Barcelona by surprise and went for the Jugular in UCL 07, spotting the hole in Chelsea’s wall for a Danny Agger goal that was decided in training ground(my all time favourite). What am I trying to do here? This blog won’t be enough to fill up the space of all the little moves you made that won the game for us.
Liverpool are number one in the UEFA ranking (atleast until the next release). That’s the recognition I was talking about. This means lot for a club that has made it’s name in the competition. 21 years the club has waited and you delivered it. Now the danger of being eliminated is lurking around. Trully down to bad luck, but others fail to think so. They say the manager is responsible, because he sold Xabi Alonso and bought in an attacking full back and an injured Italian. They say it’s all down to yours playing Lucas in midfield. A guy called Maddy once wrote about how Arsene Wenger spent two years “for the sake of players he had faith in” after some pivotal players left the team. I couldn’t agree more in telling what you are doing to the likes of Lucas now. Following you has made me far less short-sighted. Your reason for buying Aquilani was that you wanted a player for five years and not for five months. In any day, I will taking losing for the moment so that the future remains bright. I salute you sir for the extent to which you look towards the future of the club even though you being a part of it might be doubted. Until last year the club relied on Alonso in directing passes towards the wing. Glen Johnson and Auerlio have restored some parity by providing width right from the defence something non-existent before.
While those are the ones I could understand, some of your moves continue to baffle me. For example, what happened to your old rotation system. What happened to the players playing out of position. Why didn’t Ryan Babel start against Birmingham. Why did Riera start against Birmingham. Dare I not say everyone is human and not infallible. But I seemed to like the old stubborn Rafa more than the orthodox new 67th minute Ryan Babel substituting one. For me Ryan Babel is a cut above Kuyt in delivering the final ball. His goal against Lyon proves he can change matches as he has done before. Kuyt is more of an option against bigger teams when he rattles the ball from the defence to the opposite box. But against minnows Babel can play. I don’t want him to be flushed down in January. He is a much bigger asset to lose. A little bit of rotation can help. Likewise Benayoun is wasted on the left. Sometimes a little bit of fantasy league will help.
I hope you are not as baffled as me on what is the right thing to do at the situation now. The way I look at it, it can be seen as a blessing in disguise. The poor run of the club has highlighted squad building and it could make the owners spend a dime or two. Am not sure if January is the time to jump in. But Van Der Vaart seems a good option. The least I expect is no panic buys. It would be better off to lose the league and come back at summer.
To the point now. Yesterday a disgraceful incident happened. The blog at which am a part of has branded you a Psycho. Which made me a little bit sullen, frustrated, regretful and bloody angry. Am sorry Sir for letting a shame of this kind happen. But an afterthought and I could only understand more. A sorry group of people who are probably impotent or virile try to neutralize their sorrow lives by having a piece of fun at a rotund genius. These kinda things are only expected because they come from a group that once booed at their manager and called for his head before his glory years. And that is why I like you more. Even your failures have been a lesson for me in this journey of my support. And that is why I or the large group of scousers are sticking for you. And that is why you haven’t left us behind yet like you ditched Valencia.

Nice One man…
Like I have said before, the guy is one of the best coaches in the world, and with a strong squad and a transfer kitty at his disposal he can win trophies, he’s just not the build teams in the Wenger and Fergie mould (but very few are)…
And totally agree with the first point, I am totally surpised why he’s still at Anfield…in fact if Pelligrini fails to win a bunch of trophies this year, expect Rafa to be heading to Madrid next year…where if he asks for a lampshade he will get a chandelier….
I dont expect any clarity of thought from the replies to follow. What will follow will be a barrage of noise and attempted humour, from the usual suspects, Mugged or not
Good thoughtful article da… But it doesn’t take anything away from the fact that Rafa is siimply not in the mould of SAF or Wenger.
As Harish says above, Rafa is not really the builder of teams. On the other hand, he is not the best tactician around either. There is someone called Mourinho who is miles ahead of Rafa… After 7 years in a club, if you’re getting booted because your squard is no good, then the blame lies with the manager. Thats the reality whether you may wanna face it or not
Mourinho??? quit joking around. Be it Inter or Chelsea, take any player that he bought in and the amount of money he spent on them. u wud know y. And face to face Benitez has smudged Mourinho twice in CL. not a bad tactician
Rafa’s commitment to liverpool is something very commendable. Only if the liverpool board show the same degree of faith in him. Yes he has had his shares of failures but like you point out his successes far overweigh them. The primeirship needs such strong characters like RAFA “What do I write in my notes” Benitez.
Thumbs up to ur Post and Rafa da..
PS: “I did not see” the Psycho thing
Why people are praising this post is beyond me.. International breaks do strange things to people..
“Javier Mascherano one rotting in West Ham reserves to the one who Barcelona will sign for a 36m fee”
The West Ham signing of Javier Mascherano was very suspect. Everyone had pipped Tevez and Masch to sign up for a big club.
It’s unfair to give Rafa credit for ‘stopping Masch’s rotting on the bench’ – a lot of clubs wanted him, just that Rafa got him before they did. It didn’t require any genius to see that Mascherano was very good.
“The least I expect is no panic buys. It would be better off to lose the league and come back at summer.”
For the 19th time (in a row), eh?
“…how Arsene Wenger spent two years “for the sake of players he had faith in” after some pivotal players left the team.”
See, Wenger has earned the right to do that by winning the League (once unbeaten too). Besides a cheeky Champions’ League and a FA Cup, there is not much Rafa can boast of.
When Wenger joined Arsenal, Arsenal were 5th, and in seven years, look what he won. Alas, not the same can be said about Rafa’s achievements.
So, before you compare Rafa with Fergie/Wenger, just read up some more Wiki articles…
“Fernando Torres who was not exactly the next big thing in football”
Very obviously, the Wikipedia articles you read while writing this did not tell you that Torres was linked to hazaar big clubs (even Real) a year before he actually moved his ass to Pool.
It might suck to not to win the League. But, after 6 or 7 years of ‘team-building’ and still not winning the Premier League is a sign that you’re not good enough.
However much I dislike Gerard, it’ll be sad to see him retire without having won the League even once.
And, if you really are a part of the Big Four, you should know that second place means nothing…
few things Mascherano and Torres were linked with a hazaar clubs rite, but Liverpool have never bought players with big money often and when they do it it comes with a risk. Torres was even linked with united. He cost 21m odd. Just say if he turned out to be another Robbie Keane it cud have gone entirely wrong.Rafas big money buys have almost been spot on. paying 30m for a striker who takes piss poor penalties is not a freedom he could afford.
listen there are hundreds of gr8 talents around the world and u dont need to be a coach to recognise talents. but sometime when the player doesnt fit in a team he turns out to be a dud. Its not abt spotting brilliant players. More abt how gud they turn out for the team. Torres record for spain speaks for this.
otherthings u have listed are merely a difference of opinion. not comparing Rafa to anyone here just said wat he did in his world. Wenger won titles. But did he win any after Roman took over Chelsea. You see unfortunatley for Rafa his time coincided with one extra rival. its just impossible to build teams with the funds he has had. u might say he made a lot of poor buys, but most of which he actually made profit. Not wanting to give excuses. Just mere facts
Mourinho has been talking abt coming to England. Will he come to Liverpool. NO. Becoz he will suck at it as much as u think of Rafa to manage with the kind of funds.
and for the 19th time in a row. United had a similar barren run before fergies first title. We are all in it for the long run. Atleast I am.
Stop comparing Rafa to Fergie… You’re saying that Just coz Fergie didn’t win anything in his first 7 years gives Rafa the right not to.. You’re also assuming that rafa will go on to win 11 Titles which is hypothetical BS…. After 7 years, your squard is no better than it was when rafa took over.. In fact liverpool’s bench is the weakest in the entire top half of the table… Apart from a couple of youngsters like Pachecho, Rafa does not have a stream of talent coming out from the youth system like SAF had after 7 years…
So stop making this totally brainless comparison of Rafa to SAF or Wenger… The latter two have proven themselves and Rafa has yet to…
Ok, since you are so hell-bent on comparing the two -
1) When SAF joined United (1986), United had finished 4th.
When FB joined Pool (2004), Liverpool had finished 4th.
2) RB and Fergie both had cash to buy players, and dipped into their transfer kitty on joining. Whether it be Steve Bruce and Brian Mclair, or Xabi Alonso and Reina.
Now, see the (not so) subtle difference -
3) In the next five years, United’s performance improved considerably, finishing second, winning Cups, etc.
In the next five years, Liverpool remained exactly where they were. The only time they topped the table was when they had played three matches more than United.
4) At the end of six years, the United academy was about to let lose onto the world, the likes of Giggs, Scholes, Bekham and Neville (brothers).
At the end of six years, people still go – “Wtf! Pool has an academy? I thought they just bought any guy who could converse with Benitez”
By the way, why doesn’t Pool buy Chucho Benitez? That might be fun.
For a club who has won many leagues to sit back and say – “I might lose out this year, but I’ll build a team” – that makes sense.
You can’t keep building teams 19 years on the trot!
Psycho… maybe not.. but good enough to lead a top four side – No way!
where did I compare him to Fergie in the first place
United had a similar barren run before fergies first title
That imo is comparing the two… You’re saying that since SAF took 7 years to win the league, its ok for Rafa Benitez to do so..
@ Kedarm
Tut tut.. May the Rafalution continue forever.
Read it properly. Kedar was abt how we went 19 years. I was talking abt United’s similar run . If ur obsessed with things I cant help.
This is not the first that you’ve compared Rafa to Fergie… Can you tell me hand to heart that you’ve never compared them or said that since Fergie’s first few years were barren, Rafa can go without trophies… You’ve even gone as far as to suggest that rafa will win many league titles in the future just like SAF did as Rafa’s record until now is similar to that of SAF.. Which is stupid
one thing thats getting my nerves is how u go on keep assuming things i hv never said. My first post abt rafa and Fergie was just abt how both of them fared in their beginning years. I have never intended to tell that Rafa is greater than Fergie or wenger or that he would win 11 titles. My point is just that Rafa has not done bad at all given with his funds situation. Fergie was more fortunate in the sense that when he started winning there was no established powerhouse, Liverpool having lost their way. In rafa’s case he had to deal with 3 other clubs. That doesnt mean am taking anything away from Fergie or Rafa is greater than him. so dont waste both of our times by making up something of ur own
Fergie was more fortunate in the sense that when he started winning there was no established powerhouse,
I loled at that…. How can Fergie be more fortunate? He inherited a team which was in shambles and a youth system that hadn’t produced a player in years. Liverpool were very much dominant and Arsenal were on the emergence. The alcohol culture was killing the club and half the squard was unfit. To add to his woes, there was no Europe to attract the foreign players thanks to liverpool’s antics.
Compare it to Rafa. He atleast inherited a squard that won the UEFA cup and consistently finished in the top4. You may point out the emergence of Chelsea as a factor. But don’t forget that after the departures of RVN and Becks, SAF had to rebuild the whole squard and 8 of the starting 11 vs Chelsea was brought in after 2004. In the same time SAF has won every trophy possible in the past 5 years. THAT is management
*WTF*
“Fergie was more fortunate in the sense that when he started winning there was no established powerhouse, Liverpool having lost their way.”
1) Liverpool won the League in 85-86 (the season before Fergie joined)
2) They continued winning – in 87-88 and 89-90
3) In the years they didn’t win: 2nd in 86-87, 2nd in 88-89, 2nd in 90-91,
4) FA Cup in 89
5) And before Fergie arrived, Liverpool won the League in 81-82, 82-83, 83-84 and came 2nd in 84-85
No established powerhouse? Seriously?
Fergie powerhouse kicked your established ass so bad that you really forgot?
dont jump at things before u see it, please try to make an effort at what I have said. I was talking abt the era after Fergie started winning not before. Liverpool were never the same after Kenny left and dont tell me they were a powerhouse under Souness. Am off now……
Hey Arvi,
The era after Fergie began winning?
There were a lot of good teams then. Leeds, Blackburn, Newcastle, etc.
It’s unfair that you discredit Fergie’s like that – Fergie raised the bar so high with the team of the 90′s that no team appeared to be a powerhouse till Wenger stepped in and developed his team.
Of course by then, Liverpool had lost the plot..
I agree that Benitez is quite good but I will still refer to him as a psycho. Honestly, his only excellent buy (not considering Torres and Mascherano who were already quite famous by the time they signed with Pool) was Pepe Reina. Consider buys like Lucas, Ngog and Dossena though. He will definitely not make a profit if he decides to sell those players. AND I dont think even the most die hard pool supporters see those guys “maturing” and “fitting into the perfect first team role”. That said and done, I also believe that at full strength, Pool has a very good team but only at full strength which is what leads to dangerous times for any EPL team.
Sample,
This whole concept of ‘being at full strength’ is a stupid concept, and should be banished from football blogs, reviews, discussions, etc. When you have a set of players playing a match every weekend, and quite a few mid-week matches, it is impossible that your team is going to be fully fit for more than an occasional weekend.
This ‘full strength’ business is a more diplomatic way of saying – “sucky bench”. To survive in the top four, you have to have at least sixteen top quality players. You can’t go about having a great nine, two exceptional players and a bunch of guys on the bench who would be on the bench had they been playing for Crystal Palace as well..
yea u r rite there at whatever u r saying. listen be it first team players or those on the bench. lets take each player and compare at what value they were bought . atleast u might get an idea of what i am saying
@kedarm
I completely agree with you about the “full strength team” concept. I’m just trying to say that Benitez is not completely nuts but just a tad bit unlucky. Sucky bench and all aside, it’s not often that a manager has to deal with half his first team injured!!
ok, i realised that I did call Benitez a Psycho. Never mind. The international break is almost over.
I forgot…no Liverpool comment is complete without that golden name: Voronin
first of all Sample, voronin was bought for free and the time we sell him we ll get a minimum of 5-6m. U dont know how much he is rated at bundesliga, pretty much his type of place. Ngog was bought for 1.5m and he is 21 years old. He has more goals to minutes played ratio that is better than Gerrard. he is 21 years old for godsake. and I saw ur comment abt Lucas the other day. I am sure abt what am telling when i say that u dont watch Liverpool’s games much and feed on what the so called experts keep going on becoz Lucas has been the best player for Liverpool in many matches even against united, Lyon etc… So as i said its sometimes a honour when duds like u prefer to call Rafa a Psycho
erm whatever you may say about my knowledge of liverpool footballing knowledge (which I agree is almost zero beyond the bigfour matches), Ngog might have a bunch of goals right now, but it’s better to wait and see how good he’ll really turn out to be. I guess we all have our different views about soem players in the squad we support. Heck, I’ve even said that Eboue is awesome once in a while. I am pretty sure everyone out there will beg to differ!!
@ sample
and to say torres and Mascha are the only players worth it is ridiculous. there are players like Yossi,Aurelio,Agger in the current squad not to forget alonso.
Yossi for 5m , Aurelio for free – daylight robbery i ll say considering what their value to the team is. then again Rafa is no wenger, but some of his buys seems to go unnoticed. In case u prefer I have the full signing list of whats hot and wats shit that Rafa bought. but i doubt the situation will be any different .
Nope it wont be.
But yea I agree I forgot about Alonso and Yossi. STILL, as an Arsenal fan, it is my duty to look at the nots.
And I still think that Voronin is not worth a position in one of the big four. I hadnt seen the bought for free part before but I definitely wont see the sold for six million part after.
AND YES, Rafa is no Wenger. Which was what I was going to drive at, till I saw your earlier comments and saw that you werent saying he is either.
It is unfair to criticize a manager and the way he functions because we never know what actually goes on inside his head. I feel that Rafa likes those big glory moments.. 80th minute sub for the 90th minute piledriver.. 3 goals down at half-time to winning the ucl. I get the sneaking suspicion that he dangles the carrot in front of fans as much as he dangles it for himself. And if he cant get it with a spectacular leap then it aint worth gettin at all. 6 years to build a club does sound a bit off though! But i hv to admit that i enjoy watchin 6 days outta 7, the seventh bein saturday or sunday night.
that was watchin liverpool play 6 days outta 7
Sample is RAPING the comments section
What you ran out of stuff huh?
no da…exam time + international break
they should just give us a gun and tell us to shoot ourselves.
