(Pop-Culture Reference Alert): And so it is, O my brothers, that your friend and humble narrator finally slept off Saturday night, and woke up on a bright Sunday morning to a mild headache and a smile on his face.
However, I think the droogs in the picture would have a much bigger headache and a much smaller smile on their Sunday mornings. What say you, my brothers and only friends?
Many people wondered if the first of the Big Four clashes was coming too early in the season. Notwithstanding nonsense like this, it’s evident that everyone instinctively knows a big match – the players, managers, fans, even the dogs and pigeons on the streets and/or near the grounds. Or whatever stray animals it is that England has.In a way, it was a valid concern, with incidental games in the Champions League just finishing, and psychological news from the transfer window still affecting players. But then, there are always going to be some reason which got in the way of ‘perfect preparation’ for these games all through the season, so might as well get on with it eh?
The lineups were a bit of a surprise, with Fergie reacting to Arsenal’s formation rather than put out his A-team. That must rank among the worst mistakes in his career, right up there with Djemba-Djemba-Djemba-(tell me when to stop) and letting go of Jaap Stam. The point to note is that Arsenal don’t have strikers. They have wonderful midfielders, box-to-box players, pacy wingers and divers. But no strikers. So Wenger’s got no other formation to play. United have Carrick and Fletcher. And no one else who can actually play down the center of midfield. Hence, common opinion from about 70,000 at Old T and more than a million watchin on their tellys around 30 minutes into the match – Where the heck is Berba?
Carrick’s got a problem. Since that penalty Buuurn, he’s basically forgotten what to do with the ball once it’s somewhere around him. It’s not even in a simple ‘loss of form’ sense that I’m saying this, it’s in a very serious psychological sort of thing. Almost all of the Arsenal 11 took the ball off him at least once. Almunia would have too, if he had taken the penalty. Thankfully, he didn’t. However, it speaks volumes about his state of mind when you see his celebration here (Importantly, note Roon at the same moment)
Of course, RVP is going ‘Oh no, not again’. But again, I wouldn’t completely blame Carrick for being stunned at this moment. For this moment, was when Abou Diaby went from two-goal Hero, to minus-one-goal Zero as he impeccably finished into his own net from a Giggs cross. Why did he do what he did? That, all ye people, is going to be the ‘When did the Universe begin?’ question of football. The ‘Traveling Salesman Problem’ equivalent of training ground moves. The ‘Why did the chicken cross the road?’of Football Trips. In fact, I got one right now.
Q. Why did Diaby score an own goal?
A. To get to the other side.
Was he heading it back to his keeper? Did he not see there were totally three United players in the box, all of whom were 4 inches shorter than him? Did he take his role of second striker too seriously? Do I look like I care? It’s the first time I’ve got football and a stand-up show rolled into one, I’ll take it I say!
And you thought that was the end of it? No no, how can any Arsenal comedy be complete without our very own Emmanuel Eboue stepping up? Or in this case, leaping up and crashing to the ground as he was brutally challenged and had the wind knocked out of him by… er… the wind. To mark this defining moment in football, a few big decisions have been proposed:
1. 4 match ban for Evra for not making any contact and showing up poor Eboue in such poor light.
2. In addition to Pass, Run, Sprint and Shoot keys, The Official FIFA 2010 game will have one special key for ‘Dive’ when you play as Arsenal. You will also get to switch player to Wenger, and a popup will surface which says ‘I didn’t see it‘.
3. Platini will not pick on Arsenal any more. They seem to be doing it fine themselves.
And before all of you Goners get excited and go on about the other parts of the game – Rooney is not required to leap over the keeper. The keeper is required to make contact with the ball, and is required to make no contact with the player. Gallas was offside. And yes, in the end, it is the 3 points that matter.
First Blood.

Priceless…. But TBH, i feel sorry for Wenger… I like him and his approach to football…
Who needs Ronaldo when u have Mike Dean

Priceless…. But TBH, i feel sorry for Rooney… I like him and his approach to football…
The best of the lot….Atleast rooney isn’t an hypocrite like Gerrard…
score an own goal and adamantly refuse to score at the other two reason why diaby is le god…man the match was awesome…..well add to it Wenger’s python-esque comical activities at the end…..Some match….so until next time DIABY,DIABY, DEEYAABEE…
Farcical match, Ref fucked us big time.. Diaby deserves as much blame as alumnia who errord in judging in both the goals.Utd rode their luck cant blame em at the end of the day nothin other than the 3 point counts.
quoting arseblog,
“…is absolutely vital and we need to see the Diaby who has worked extra hard this summer, not the guy who coasts through games”
clearly they saw the Diaby who has worked extra hard….
it’s fuckin excellent….
For all the Diaby bashers, who love to make fun of people for making the odd mistake…
1. He had a great game going forward, and almost made up for it instantaneously with a brilliant run, unfortunately the ball was on his wrong foot. he won tackles, beat defenders and pretty much worked his socks off, barring one unfortunate incident.
2. For all the laughing scousers, remember a certain gentleman named Lucas. His performance against Villa was much worse than Diaby even without factoring in the own goal, and who is ur alternative to lucas….a man yet to play a full season of football in a major league. Arsenal on the other hand have Cesc and Nasri ahead of Diaby, not to mention Rosicky (who is no worse than Aquilain in terms of his injury record)
On other matters, the treatment given to Wenger was disgusting, both by the Ref and the those fans hurling unseemly abuses. Of course this being Manchester United no ref or governing body is going to punish them
And is Rooney now going to be banned for two much for decieving the ref. Atleast Eduardo dived when the keeper came at him, Rooney’s left foot was dragging, readying for a fall before he came anywhere near Almunia.
And Eboue was what, chopped down by Evra? He practically leaped over him
Will try to put up the photo of Eboue, looking at the ref, expecting a foul…
I missed the first five minutes of the match.. Was Arshavin fouled by Fletcher?
He wasn’t just expecting a foul.. Evra was on a yellow.. Eboue was trying to get the ref to send him off…
Harish,
in front of the opposition fans it is very wait-for-it very immature of you to grumble about the hurling of abuses. Wenger made the situation worse for himself. He decided to go stand there and made a total idiot of himself. Since when have you have been expecting Gandhigiri in football. I am sure u know abt the grannyy-giving-Giiggs the finger at highbury. So dont complain about Wenger having to face a barrage of abuses. Come on, it made for some excellent entertainment.
And Diaby is a talent i totally agree with you. He worked his socks off, no doubt, but for whom is what you didnt get right. He has just scored an important own goal let people celebrate the moment man. Dont be a grand dad.
And talking about Refs supporting Utd at OT particularly by the sexually-assaulted-at-OT Wenger is total ISO certified claptrap. He clearly has forgotten the Adebayor’s hand of dog goal season before last and the save of the season from Emmanuel -a-diver-by-birth Eboue not so long ago. Do not make too much of the talking points and stop being the same old petulant housewife sounding Gunner. BELEIVE!!!
P.S: Diaby, Diaby!, DIeaaaaaabeeeee!!!!
All that said and done… why the hell did almunia dive @ rooney’s fee??. Given the form that the guy is in [and his now infamous composure in such situations] he would ‘ve clearly posed no goal threat in that situation
Stupidity and impotency lost asrsenal the match..
United went a goal down.. they din’t panic and started put in more effort. especially in midfield.
when arsenal went a goal down they did everything else but cry(an la gallas @ birmingham) and united could ‘ve had a couple more in the last 5 minutes and that would’ve really embarrassed arsenal.
This is what separates champions from the pretenders.
Btw relating possession to dominance is not necessarily true… [The number was 53 to 47 or something here.. which is a meager advantage]
Ac milan in their champions lg winning year were a counter attacking team.. United had a lot of possession but one can’t deny that we were soundly beaten..
p.s it was nice to see wenger making a jackass of himself.. After so many visits he doesn’t know which direction the tunnel @ old trafford is..
@ Harish
What are you talking about mate… Rooney didn’t dive… He made Almunia make the challenge and went down.. thats what every player in the game does today.. Make the opposition make a challenge and go down.. Thats just the way the game is played these days…
Rooney’s left foot was dragging, readying for a fall before he came anywhere near Almunia.

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/3663/okx69u.gif
If you watch the images closely, you can see that Rooney was stretching his right foot to reach the ball… When that happens, the left foot automatically stays behind and it’ll look like dragging… The issue of whether Rooney went down before contact is contentious.. But he was still standing before contact.. At the end of the day, Rooney made Almunia commit to the challenge and then went down.. It was a clear cut penalty under today’s rules…
@ Venky
Firstly if u look at it real carefully, u will see Roony’s left knee bending and body moving downwards before his foot even reaches near Almunia, but thats a very tricky thing to see, and I don’t blame the ref for giving it, most would have. The point is that it is still very close and undecided when seen on a replay, and can be construed as a dive or in the least he fell in order to avoid a challenge, in either case its not entirely different from the Eduardo incident. I am not accusing Rooney of diving (in this incident at least) but accusing governing bodies of double standards when it comes to Englishmen and Man Utd players
Lets not open that can of worms, what with Gerard being another serial diver, and Fernando Torres trying to become the new Ronaldo by being the man who hits the ground when any player reaches touching distance of him.
And unlike the above 2, gunners fan dont hold up Eboue as a hero or savior. He recieves enough flak from his own fans who don’t condone his behavior.
i’m not talking about Eboue alone… Don’t tell me Cesc or Henry have never done this… Making your opponent commit to a challenge and then goind down under is pretty common these days..
I couldn’t agree more about torres.. He’s become as petulant as Ronaldo, to the extent that Rafa has come out and said that he needs to toughen up…
@ Venky
Agreed that most footballers do it at some point of time, but there are some who are noted for diving, and neither Cesc nor Henry were amongst those. Eboue is the only Arsenal player known for diving (don’t name Pires cause he is very much an Eduardo like case, tarnished by a couple of incidents)
All I am saying is that Eduardo would not have got the amount of vilifaction or punishment that he got had he been an Englishman or Man Utd player
@ Harish…
Listen mate.. I feel sorry for eduardo… I feel that the flak he is receiving is too much…. But the claim that United players are let off the hook is crazy….I’ll back this up..
1. Fletcher got sent off at emirates last season for an apparent no foul.. He missed the final and the rest is history..
2. Evra got a 4 match(i think) ban for a training ground melee while chelsea got off scott free….
3. Ronaldo was criticized universally for his actions(not undeservedly).. But they still overlooked the fact that he was the best player in the premiership…
So don’t you go around saying that United get off easy easy on anything…
Venky,
Fletcher’s was a refereeing mistake.
Evra was rightfully punished, the coward punched a groundsman …fuckin sore loser
And Ronaldo was criticized for his petulance and because he was so good
So, none of ur points can back-up ur claim
But generally, United players, esp English players are let off the hook much more easily than most others.
Prime example, Rooney.
@ Keyrock…
The issue here is not whether they were guilty or not… the question is are they let off the hook easilty… As i’ve pointed out, they’re not.. And when is rooney let off easily? You captain John ”SLIPPERY’ Terry is as belligerent as rooney and i’ve not seen him take any flak until now…
I hear Alan Green (yes anti utd man)
gives out stink to a arsenal fan who said Rooney dived
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode…06_29_08_2009/
Skip forward to about 23.30mins in it
@ Harish: Dah y u taking it out on Lucas. Am with u on Rooney’s dive. But the disrespect to wenger was disappointing, altho he shudnlt have embarassed himself in the first case…
Anyways like ducky said twas like football and a stand-up show rolled into one….
@ Aravind..
Rooney’s dive? not again macha….
Look at the link i provided…
When you over stretch one leg to reach the ball, the other leg cannot simply stay planted on the spot, it will trail after the other one, and since Almunia dives in and prevents him from correcting that movement, he cannot stay standing.
“score an own goal and adamantly refuse to score at the other two reason why diaby is le god…man the match was awesome…..well add to it Wenger’s python-esque comical activities at the end…..Some match….so until next time DIABY,DIABY, DEEYAABEE…”
“clearly they saw the Diaby who has worked extra hard….
it’s fuckin excellent….”
@Arvi
comments like the ones above and the fact that a guy who had a decent game (3 continous ones in fact) and is being mocked unnecessarily is the reason why I chose to point out why there are more comical things in the game than Diaby.
@Ducky
And frankly the comments about Arsenal and diving in this are deplorable, of all the big 4 arsenal
have the best record as far as divers are concerned.
And as far as add ons to FIFA 2010, maybe you could have a special sound effect where unsportive profanities are chanted by the crowd every time matches are played at Old Trafford
And one last point, which other manager has the balls to go stand in the crowd in front of uncouth Man Utd fans abusing him in the worst possible manner. Fergie doesnt have the balls to even come for press interviews when his team loses
@Venky
Talkin abt special treatment, UEFA atleast heard an appeal for the Fletcher red card, even though the rules state that no such appeal is possible except for mistaken identity cases
And no one has even raised the issue of why video evidence shouldnt be used to punish vidic who slapped rodallega and instigated a fight against Wigan
What makes you think that they heard the appeal.. We lodged the appeal and they replied that under the current rules, its not permitted.. If we are the favourite sons as you claim, the wrong decision would have been overturned…
instigated a fight against Wigan
Did you even see the match.. It was rodallega who had a dangerous collision with foster… Thats what caused vidic to come into the fray..
But i understand your frustrations… you need some reason to convince yourself that United doesn’t deserrve the three titles over the past 3 years.. Go on then.. Stick your head in the sand i say..
harish,
more comical than diaby?why look towards liverpool for comics when you have wenger, eboue and silvestre. Dude he scored an inexplicable own goal.you have to laugh at him.diaby! Diaby! Diaby!
lol….best record as regards diving among the big four.
@ harish : Ya i get it, but thats a manc’s opinion abt Diaby. Always the Golden rule is : We stand United against United. And Vidic slapped Rodellaega??? Oh mine…Sick of the refs these days… Sigh..
Typical scouse response.. If you can’t beat someone straight up, find a crooked way….
Agree totally with Harish! Its deplorable UEFA nd platini’s double standards, Wenger has advocated the usage of Video evidence but as always falls on deaf ears.Hmm lets c if any fairplay marks the reported diving of pedro on super cup few days ago ..I mean if Eduardo is marked for sudden spl treatment it should apply for one nd all.
Oh and duck, the behaviour of the united fans is a DISGRACE. Taunting is OK. I’m all for the fans getting into the act. But singing songs like Wenger is a paedophile is utter nonsense. there has to be some level of decency.
Like the cuntly cole incident is replete with decency. get lost.
I agree with you on that one Maddy… Waving fake currency at cashley cole is one thing.. But those taunts against Wenger is deplorable… But you must realise that not all supporters are like that….
All that you boys can get out of all of that is the chanting?
Its convenient there is no mention of the stonewall penalty from Darren-Man-of-the-Match Fletcher here. That was as stonewall as they come. Won’t get a clearer one all season
Rooney is not required to leap over the keeper. But he’s also not supposed to buckle and go down before there’s contact. He clearly was on the way down before Almunia got to him and that is a dive.
But that aint surprising is it. I mean rewind back to 2004 and he did the same thing. Leapt over Sol’s foot.
Paraphrasing from the Arseblogger, the Shrek man Child that is Rooney is English hence he’s clever, honest and hard working whereas Eduardo is a fuckin foreign cheat. Xenophobic bastards.
I couldn’t care about the pedophile chanting. Its part of who the Mancunts are and make no difference.
The thing is United were tripe. On the evidence of last night’s game United have a crap team and have nothing to crow about. Just be happy you got the points.
The game itself was a fuckin disgrace. The treatment of Wenger was a disgrace. Ferguson not acknowledging the penalty, and actually having the gall to claim Fletch got the ball was a disgrace.
It was daylight robbery and Mike Dean was United’s best player.
Lets say for argument’s sake that it was a penalty.. Ho did it change the course of the match… Arsehaven scored 30 seconds later… The only difference it would’ve made is in my fantasy team where RVP would’ve(crossing my fingers here) got the points instead of Arsehaven… Apart from that Mike Dean didn’t put a foot wrong… Wenger sending off was disgraceful. But it was the fourth official’s call and Mike dean had to take his advise and send off Wenger…
And before you bring up the rooney issue again- what the feck is he supposed to do? can’t you see that he had just stretched to get to the ball… He’s not a feckin wizard to apparate to the ball with both feet…
Venky – Off the perch
How does it matter whether he scored 30 seconds later or 30 minutes later. It was a penalty. It could have changed the course of the game. Period.
Its nonsensical to say that it could have changed the game if Arshavin didn’t score but since he did, it didn’t
It was a stonewall penalty. It wasn’t given. Terrible refereeing. Disgrace really.
And please do watch Rooney’s dive again. Before Almunia gets to him, you see his legs buckle and he’s on his way down. Its pretty evident that he ‘won’ the penalty. But since he’s English it will be glossed over and never mentioned while Eduardo is hung dry.
@Vishwa.
Mate, i’m entitled to an opinion about yesterday’s game. I thought United were shit and I said it. So before telling me to look at Arsenal, how about you either debate about the points I made or don’t debate at all
Mike Dean was responsible for our loss. The dive, the stonewall penalty (maybe 2 with the RVP incident). Its hard to look past that…
We were robbed. Blind. In plain daylight and its a disgrace.
gunner’s dream,
add “… And diaby ours”. We played like shit.agreed.u guys could not take advantage.so address your deficiency rather than harping about how bad the united team is or how only mike dean is responsible for the loss.
^^^ Spot on.. the same old gooners.. trying to find excuses instead of addressing their own mistakes…
