(Pop-Culture Reference Alert): And so it is, O my brothers, that your friend and humble narrator finally slept off Saturday night, and woke up on a bright Sunday morning to a mild headache and a smile on his face.
However, I think the droogs in the picture would have a much bigger headache and a much smaller smile on their Sunday mornings. What say you, my brothers and only friends?
Many people wondered if the first of the Big Four clashes was coming too early in the season. Notwithstanding nonsense like this, it’s evident that everyone instinctively knows a big match – the players, managers, fans, even the dogs and pigeons on the streets and/or near the grounds. Or whatever stray animals it is that England has.In a way, it was a valid concern, with incidental games in the Champions League just finishing, and psychological news from the transfer window still affecting players. But then, there are always going to be some reason which got in the way of ‘perfect preparation’ for these games all through the season, so might as well get on with it eh?
The lineups were a bit of a surprise, with Fergie reacting to Arsenal’s formation rather than put out his A-team. That must rank among the worst mistakes in his career, right up there with Djemba-Djemba-Djemba-(tell me when to stop) and letting go of Jaap Stam. The point to note is that Arsenal don’t have strikers. They have wonderful midfielders, box-to-box players, pacy wingers and divers. But no strikers. So Wenger’s got no other formation to play. United have Carrick and Fletcher. And no one else who can actually play down the center of midfield. Hence, common opinion from about 70,000 at Old T and more than a million watchin on their tellys around 30 minutes into the match – Where the heck is Berba?
Carrick’s got a problem. Since that penalty Buuurn, he’s basically forgotten what to do with the ball once it’s somewhere around him. It’s not even in a simple ‘loss of form’ sense that I’m saying this, it’s in a very serious psychological sort of thing. Almost all of the Arsenal 11 took the ball off him at least once. Almunia would have too, if he had taken the penalty. Thankfully, he didn’t. However, it speaks volumes about his state of mind when you see his celebration here (Importantly, note Roon at the same moment)
Of course, RVP is going ‘Oh no, not again’. But again, I wouldn’t completely blame Carrick for being stunned at this moment. For this moment, was when Abou Diaby went from two-goal Hero, to minus-one-goal Zero as he impeccably finished into his own net from a Giggs cross. Why did he do what he did? That, all ye people, is going to be the ‘When did the Universe begin?’ question of football. The ‘Traveling Salesman Problem’ equivalent of training ground moves. The ‘Why did the chicken cross the road?’of Football Trips. In fact, I got one right now.
Q. Why did Diaby score an own goal?
A. To get to the other side.
Was he heading it back to his keeper? Did he not see there were totally three United players in the box, all of whom were 4 inches shorter than him? Did he take his role of second striker too seriously? Do I look like I care? It’s the first time I’ve got football and a stand-up show rolled into one, I’ll take it I say!
And you thought that was the end of it? No no, how can any Arsenal comedy be complete without our very own Emmanuel Eboue stepping up? Or in this case, leaping up and crashing to the ground as he was brutally challenged and had the wind knocked out of him by… er… the wind. To mark this defining moment in football, a few big decisions have been proposed:
1. 4 match ban for Evra for not making any contact and showing up poor Eboue in such poor light.
2. In addition to Pass, Run, Sprint and Shoot keys, The Official FIFA 2010 game will have one special key for ‘Dive’ when you play as Arsenal. You will also get to switch player to Wenger, and a popup will surface which says ‘I didn’t see it‘.
3. Platini will not pick on Arsenal any more. They seem to be doing it fine themselves.
And before all of you Goners get excited and go on about the other parts of the game – Rooney is not required to leap over the keeper. The keeper is required to make contact with the ball, and is required to make no contact with the player. Gallas was offside. And yes, in the end, it is the 3 points that matter.
First Blood.

One can’t really tell which player from both sides really stood out.. but the man of the match had to go to Mike Dean …
he gave away a card for everything and how could he miss the foul on Arshavin and then point to the spot straight away when Rooney went down..
My man of the match is definitely Abou ‘the man’ Diaby for his sublime header.. what a piece of skill.. Gave me the goosebumps…
Venky – Off the perch
How does it matter whether he scored 30 seconds later or 30 minutes later. It was a penalty. It could have changed the course of the game. Period.
Its nonsensical to say that it could have changed the game if Arshavin didn’t score but since he did, it didn’t
It was a stonewall penalty. It wasn’t given. Terrible refereeing. Disgrace really.
And please do watch Rooney’s dive again. Before Almunia gets to him, you see his legs buckle and he’s on his way down. Its pretty evident that he ‘won’ the penalty. But since he’s English it will be glossed over and never mentioned while Eduardo is hung dry.
@Vishwa.
Mate, i’m entitled to an opinion about yesterday’s game. I thought United were shit and I said it. So before telling me to look at Arsenal, how about you either debate about the points I made or don’t debate at all
Mike Dean was responsible for our loss. The dive, the stonewall penalty (maybe 2 with the RVP incident). Its hard to look past that…
We were robbed. Blind. In plain daylight and its a disgrace.
Its no more a disgrace than your win against Celtic.. Its a disgrace that you get to proceed through to the group stages of the CL… Look at the goals… A FREAK deflection, AN OWN GOAL and a fecking Cheat Penalty… The other 2 goals you scored when they weere marauding forward to salvage something…
If you can take that and say that you deserved to win, then We fecing deserved the three points as well….
Are you for real da?? Don’t tell me you couldn’t see the GULF between the quality of Arsenal and Celtic. In fact we were better yesterday too. And again, Eduardo did go down too easy. No one’s disputing that. However no one fucking accepts that Rooney did the same. Which is where the xenophobia comes into the picture. And don’t gimme your analysis on how the left leg will trail if the right leg is extended. that is bollocks.
And again, no one’s talking about the own goal. That was our fault. Which means you ought to shut up about the deflection. Those things are part and parcel of the game. whereas shitty refereeing shouldnt be
The table doesn’t give a s*it if you play exciting footie.. All that matters are the points… Its the same with the CL… Doesn’t matter if you played better than celtic… You didn’t deserve the THREE GOALS.. But no one is complaining about the result here… So stop moaning the result at the weekend… Concentrate on winning against Citeh and do us all a favour
You really want more reasons why Mike dean is a disgrace:
1. The fact that fletcher got away without a yellow card despite numerous ill timed tackles, at some point a normal ref would have been tired of it
2. Van persie being given a yellow for a challenge exactly similar to that of Fletcher on arshavin (and he actually got the ball before man) And yes the penalty would have made an impact. it was clearly worthy of a yellow, which fletcher would have got. Now imagine your only real midfield battler playing for over an half with a yellow on his mind. Please tell me tht doesnt matter
3. Sagna’s ridiculous yellow for a feeble protest against a throw in which he should have been awarded
4. Facts: Average no. of yellows by Dean in a match=3.5
Yest 6 arsenal players were carded depite arsenal committing 6 fouls lesser
Only time Dean has done this before was in the same fixture last year where he gave 5 yellows, all to Arsenal
(From football365.com)
Of course I am just waiting for all the Man U guys to say that it was just a coincidence, and had absolutely no impact on the result.
yes the fact the ref was clearly intimidated at old trafford and made virtually every crucial decision in the home team’s favor was vital
@ManC’s
You want to know wat a real joke is…your fans..and those disgusting chants which weren’t ringing just yesterday, but have been for years. And it is a sizeable portion of the crowd not just a few. And the bigger joke is the fact that nothing has been done by the Premiership or ManU management to stop this.
And yeah, you say that all we get out of this is the chanting. Well mate, take everything away, the true essence of a football club, its greatest heritage are its fans, those are the ones who will remain for ever. And they have been for a long time a disgrace, to chant abuses against one of the most greatest managers in the league’s history is just against the spirit of football. And the cashley incident is no parallel whatsoever, Arsene has never said or done anything to give Man Utd fans a reason for such an action, especially not to have it go on for ages.
Awww… ain’t that cute.
@harish,
you beauty.just like diaby’s goal full of intent.diaby,diaby,diabeefedede!
you do realize that you are generalizing don’t you…. Every club has misfits… There may be a lotta fans taunting him.. But a very few proportion of those will use the vile terms such as paedophile…. The rest are genaral taunts and cat calls that are pretty harmless..
Now that you seem so serious about insults, lets touch on another subject… You seem to be a pretty knowledegable footie fan.. So you must know that the term ‘MAN *’ refers to the munich disaster.. It is very derogatory and an extremely personal insult to any United fan.. Yet you use that tern frequently.. So i recommend you look at yourself before becoming the beacon of righteousness….
^^^^ HAHAHA. Welcome to the Hypocrite club Venkat. This gentlemen is the man who has insulted the Hillsborough 96 and took bargaining rights out of GENERALIZING Heysel 39…enuf said. (Now i know a huge blog size comment is coming next to contradict me, but please…. )
Point me a single instance where i insulted 96.. I never did so.. i just ridiculed the JFT campaign after what happened at heysel and your lack of respect for the 39…
“i just ridiculed the JFT campaign” .Now sod off.
I thought we decided never to bring up Hillsborough or Heysel again… I dunno why you are so insistent on bringing this up and act offended by it…
@Venky
I guess I am not as knowledgable about Manchester Utd as u are, so i admit that i was not aware of the reference to Munich. So if i have hurt the sensitivities of u fans I apologise.
I guess thts a simple enough and reasonable thing to do, something which no one at Manchester United has done for 5 years now, despite the media pointing out the constant calls uttered by the fans. And I am assuming the people who run the club are aware that ‘paedophile’ is an offensive term, or do you think it is necessary for someone to explain it to them as you politely explained to me the error of my terminology
The people who run my club are fecking jerk offs.. the day they die will be the new diwali to all us mancunians….They’ve single handedly turned the most profitable club in the world into the most debt ridden one…. So i guess educating the fans is the least on their minds right now… Moreover, its only a minority of fans that make these deplorable chants and i fully agree with you that they should be banned for life from OT..
But i do stongly disagree with you on your accusations about the behaviour of fans at OT…
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/87796-why-arsene-wenger-will-always-be-the-bigger-better-man-than-these-scumbags
As you can see, these chants occur in the majority of english stadiums and it’s unfair of you to point your finger at United alone… Its the FA that should take action…
perfect entertainer. one can come up with one on those flyers-which-none-read titled ‘How to fuck up a perfectly good game and then make excuses’ or something like that. First, the constipated look on diaby’s face after that own goal, then Emmanuel Eboue’s backfired attempt at getting Evra a sec yellow. as if that wasn’t enough, Wenger chimping out on the stands in the end and do u really think it would offend him because some idiot calls him a paedo? Doesnt he know better? . Really i would have been happy with just a win too.
Defining moment would have to be the ‘Footy’ Foster’s save to deny RVP. That would have been game set match arsenal had it gone in. He seems to use more of his legs to save than his hands. It had all the hallmark of the 2007-08 season OT game when having gone down to ade s handball antics we came back thanks another one from Gallas. And Almunia caught Rooney and not the ball. When or how rooney went down doesnt matter coz Almunia still touched him. If he hadnt or had there been a doubt, that woulda been a different case. No player would stand in that situation. He would go to ground and make the most of it. Arsenal had lotsa possession and seemed to dominate but failed to make any real use of it. They scored from nowhere. Typical Arshavin and Foster. He seems to miss regulation ones and is intent on keeping out the toughies. Arshavin picks big games to stand up. Both teams were even when it came to real goal scoring chances. Arsenal succumbed to physical approach again. They will get it from Wigan, Bolton, Burnley, Chelsea and from all over the league. Beautiful football alone isnt gonna take them places. It takes them so far but not past the line.They have never really coped with the loss of Viera and there is no player there who will bully and do all the dirty work. It is same old story. The flatter to deceive. They need that something extra to win it. They need a player who will put tackles in and show his presence in midfield. Complaining about fletch wont work. You will be complaining about Mikel, Essien, Mascherano, Muamba and the likes all through the season. No team will allow arsenal play to their strenght. they will break down the play. they need to get a move on and work it out. But THE moment was wenger in the stands. lol. Took me back to school days when I had to stand up on the bench as a punishment
As for the abuses thrown back at wenger, it happens everywhere. Wenger has called us and our players a lota things mind you. We wont be singing his praises. It happens during high emotion and things cool down later. Coming to United, they have their own problems. We can put it down to our slow-starters tag but the other top teams wont make the same mistakes again and again. Next 2 fixtures are real test of character. Spurs away and City home.
